Robert Ernst, M.D., is Associate Vice President for Student Life and the university’s Chief Health Officer. He serves as a top advisor to the president on health and wellness for all three campuses, working to promote a health-promoting environment. Ernst led U-M’s response during the COVID-19 pandemic and now guides important health programs and committees.

He is also a clinical assistant professor and has practiced primary care at U-M since 1995. Before his current position, he was head of University Health Service and worked in leadership roles at Michigan Medicine.

Ernst graduated from the University of Notre Dame and received his medical degree from U-M, where he also completed his internal medicine training and served as chief resident. In his free time, he likes to spend time with his family and enjoy all that the Michigan outdoors has to offer.
